The Sun Ascendant by WolffyLuna The Sun Ascendant by WolffyLuna
Made for :iconmlp-atg-alumni:'s current theme 'A Triumphant Pony'.

A young Celestia has vanquished her sister (and her sister's alter ego, Nightmare Moon), but at what cost?

This isn't the only pyrrhic victory picture, so far ~MaskedRedDragon's Doctor Whooves picture [link] also touches on the theme of pyrrhic victory.

I know I've really messed up the lighting on this, but I don't really care.

Cutie mark vector from the MLP wiki. Bandage texture from `FantasyStock

Any feedback would be lovely, especially on the colour scheme and the composition. Thanks!

Hi, this critique is for #FeedbackFrenzy from group 39.
This is a beautiful drawing. Did you draw it traditionally and color it digitally? Because it's quite a rough drawing, I can see little spots all over. You can try to clean up the drawing digitally before coloring it, or you can trace the lines so that it becomes a completely digital piece. That would make it look more clean and finished.
Besides that you say you want feedback on the color scheme and composition. The colors of the pony are very light and soft (I don't know much about MLP, but I assume you didn't make up her colors). This makes it harder to draw shadows, but right now she barely has some. Try to use some complementary colors to make a little shadow, especially for the manes and tail. Also the background, you chose a simple background. That's fine, but you used very similar light colors for the sun right next to the pony. This distracts from the main subject. Using darker colors will solve this problem.
Besides that, this is a great drawing keep up the good work! :D

Hello, I'm with :iconfeedbackfrenzy: and i'll be critiquing you today~~
-----------

I'd like to start off by saying I'm a HUGE fan of MLP:FiM lol. So first, some things i like about your piece~

Obviously, I love Celestia, it's nice to see that people are drawing her since she doesn't seem to get a lot of love. I really like the concept of this piece and the moon in the background. The background colors are nice and go well together and the proportions I pretty good as well.

However, there is room for improvement (:

The first thing i notice, and this is mainly because im a huge MLP fan, is that you neglected to add the other colors of Celestia's mane. Her mane is made up of blues and greens, as well as pink. Just use some refrences next time and i'm sure you'll be fine (:
Another thing i'd like to hit on is the style of the mane. Celestia's mane is very ... curvacious? lol It has lots of wavy-ness to it and it seems you struggle to capture it. Once again, this can be easily fixed by using references.
Lastly, I'll touch on the cleanliness of the picture. The lines are very rough and scratchy and there are obviously places you didn't erase. Also, around the moon, the gradient from dark to light blue is very messy. To fix this, just simply be aware and do touch-ups where needed, as for the gradient, going over it with the blur or water tools (if you use sai) would help, or the blur or gradient brushes in PS. I don't know about other programs though. Either way, keeping the picture nice and clean makes a huge difference in the over all appearance~

Well you've got a good thing going, just remember to practice, use refrences and keep it clean and you'll be amazed how much progress you make. Don't give up! (:

I hope this critique had helped and you find it useful! <3

Thanks!

I was actually trying to do the fanon younger version of Celestia, who only has pink in her mane :).

aaaahhhh ^___^ This is pretty good in terms of proportions!

Hi, I'm TLA and I'll critique this for Feedback Frenzy. I had no idea who this was, but this is Flexia (sp?) according to my niece...??? Don't mind me if that's wrong....

hrm.... Her body structure is generally... decent. I don't know much about the drawing style of MLP, but it is pretty off if you're looking at it from realistic horse structure. Her neck and head were drawn well, but her body is a bit too thin (for realism) and her legs don't have much mass... I would like to see some grace there!

Her hair is a bit stiff as well... after all hair is free, moving object. You did a good job, but you were actually trying to hard when it came to the hair! haha! ^__^

I don't know how hooves are done in MLP, but there is some problems in terms of the structure there... there is some hair above the hoof (since horses have a piebald coat) and and the bottom of the hoof is a little bit more rounded.

If what I said above doesn't count under MLP guidelines... then ignore what I said... I was going my realism after all...

I hope this was of any help!
~TLA

Hello  welcome to :iconfeedbackfrenzy:'s contest week c: I am going to write a little and hopefully useful critique to you c:

First I am happy to see a My Little Pony Fanart in the contest Folder. Moreeover, you did Celestria quite good, the bandages and the Marking are very detailed!.

However, there are some things I want to alert you on some things on thid picture.
At first, the Background. As I can see, you wanted to point out with the moon the rejection of Celestria's sister. Nevertheless, I would make the gradient transition of the blue tones a little bit bigger, because the Bit looks a little bit too monotonous. For example, here on this Picture:[link] the sky contain different tones of blue.

About the horse itself, I would suggest you not to use the sketch, but rather a clear lineart. If your lines get wobbly and shaky, then check this [link] tutorial out. It is very easy to understand, and it might help you a lot. Another tipp I want to give you: If you lock the lineart's layer, you can easily color it. So it would get a nice effect and it would match the scene better.

The next thing I want to point out are the wings. A wing isn't composed just of one or row of feathers. It is hard to explain, but I will show you a tutorial again c: [link] It is long but very detailed and easy explained. I recommend you to read through it! Another thing that irritates me a little bit, that you just drew one wing, but both should be noticeable c:

And about the tail and the mane, they look too flat. Hair is made of little strands of hairs. So, if you want to draw it catoony like this [link] you have to make a snappy lineart, if you want it to be looking realistic then I suggest you to look trough *Tatchit's and ~Sullivan's gallery. They have fantastic and stunning pictures, and some very useful tutorials.

Nevertheless, it is a very good picture, and you choosed a very interesting topic. You have a lot of potential, and I can't wait to see more of your works. If you got any other questions, then just note me and I will answer you as soon as possible c:

Best wishes

Thanks, especially for all the tutorials. I can't use the line art one though, 'cause I do my line art with pencil and paper, then scan it in, set it to multiply and colour underneath :). But thanks anyway!

Its me again. Once again with #FeedbackFrenzy :)

Got to love them ponies!

Anyways,

The good:
Boy, I like this one even more than the other one. I love the idea, because I often find myself thinking about how poor Celestia was feeling after that fateful battle. I think you did a wonderful job of capturing the emotional turmoil she must have been feeling. I also love the the detail of the moon in the corner. I also like that you went with pink instead of her rainbowish color because I think she had a pink mane and tail when she was younger. :) I also think you did a fantastic job on the bandage and the little blood stain. I also love how you drew her wings, your style of wings really look good on her.

What could be Improved:
Okay first off, after looking at your other deviation as well I think you would benefit from taking your sketch in what ever program your using and adding another layer over it and attempting to redraw it on your program to help get rid of some of the sketch marks on your work. You could also make her neck a little shorter, you could also add to her head by giving her crown. You could also make her neck look better by making her mane look fuller and wavier. Her tail could also use to be a little fuller.

Overall
Love love LOVE the emotion and feel of the image. I don't think it would take much for you to fix the lines and then your ponies will look so much cleaner and crisper.

Wow! This is really good!

And yay! I'm not the only one who thought of a Pyrrhic victory... every other picture looked so happy I thought I was doing the theme wrong....haha.

Anyway, I really like this and this is probably a better Celestia than I could ever hope to draw..

That's one of the things I like about MLP-ATG, as long as you can explain how it fits the theme, you can draw anything for a theme! :D.
